Package 1: Reading Readiness
Children can't read to learn until they learn to read. Some children don't learn to read because they lack a set of fundamental skills that are required to "break the reading code."
This package will give teachers the tools to ensure that kindergarten and first grade students acquire a set of fundamental skills and knowledge that prepare them to be successful readers. This package addresses the following EALRs in reading. (1.1 Use word recognition & word meaning and apply phonetic principles, 1.3 read fluently, 2.3 expand comprehension by understanding sequences) and in communication (1.1 develop attention, 2.1 use narrative speech, 2.3 effective delivery).
Components of Package 1
Phonological Basics
- Phonological Coding: The ability to produce & discriminate sounds.
- Oral manipulation of sound: Segmenting and blending
Decoding Basics
- Orthographic Coding: The ability to see a letter or letter combination and say its sound.
- Phonics Elements
- Word structure
- Word and prose fluency
- Oral/Print Correspondence: The ability to see the relation between spoken and written letters, words, and word sequences
Language Basics
- Boehm 50 relational concepts such as over, beside, middle, left, right, and so on. Also, other language used in teaching and learning.
- Pretelling: Describing actions in sequences.
