Package 2: Comprehension Readiness
Some students learn to read, but they don't read to learn. Sometimes, students don't read to learn because they lack basic and advanced reading comprehension strategies and skills.
This package prepares teachers to strengthen their students' comprehension strategies and skills. This package will facilitate meeting a number of EALRs in reading (1.4 understand elements, 2.1 comprehend important ideas and details, 2.2 analyze authors' style, purpose, and perspective, 4.1 assesses strengths, 4.2 seek and offer feedback).
Components of Package 2
Basic Comprehension Skills
- Recalling details and text sequence
- Identifying inferences
- Vocabulary building skills
Intermediate Comprehension Skills
- Distinguishing among main ideas, minor ideas, and details
- Drawing conclusions
- Identifying author's point of view and purpose
- Identifying cause and effect
- Classifying and categorizing
- Distinguishing between facts and opinions
- Distinguishing between reality and fantasy
Advanced Comprehension Skills
- Identifying and describing schematic text structure such as setting, plot, character, point of view, and theme.
- Understanding different genres of writing: descriptive, procedural, persuasive, cause/effect, etc.
Self-Monitoring Strategies During Reading (Asking and answering questions, clarifying, making connections, predicting and confirming predictions, summarizing, and visualizing).
