Discover The Morningside Model Of Generative Instruction
Attend 1, 2, or all 3 weeks!
Week 1: July 14-18
Week 2: July 21- 25
Week 3: July 28 - August 1
Guest speakers: Michael Fabrizio, Dr. Carl Binder and Anita Archer
Topics will range from an overview of the Model of Generative Instruction, Fundamentals of Instruction for Reading, Writing & Math, Practice Strategies using Precision Teaching and developing students ability to generalize and apply what they know in the classroom.
CLASSES GO FROM 8 TO 5 EACH DAY
All participants have an opportunity to learn principles and practices during daily workshops and seminars. Well-known experts in learning and motivation provide guest lectures and demonstrations. Participants will complete a two-hour daily internship with students in Morningside's summer school program. Morningside's team of highly skilled supervisors will provide coaching to firm up teaching skills.
Practice with peers and students the teaching technologies and programs that promote acquisition and fluency. Some of the topics that will be covered include:
Week 1: Fundamentals of Instruction for Reading, Writing & Math
Gain an overview of the Morningside Model of Generative Instruction. Learn about various effective researchÐbased instructional protocols such as: mathetics (demonstrate, guide and test), think-alouds, delayed prompting and TAPS (Talking Aloud Problem Solving). Participants will be able to practice these protocols in various academic areas.
Week 2: Practice Strategies for Reading, Writing & Math
Learn how to design effective individual & group practice sessions that will predict retention. Become familiar with counting and charting behavior using the Standard Celeration Chart. Develop your ability to analyze performance data and design appropriate interventions for individual students.
Week 3: Apply Our Researched-Based Curriculum In Your Classroom
Learn about any of our recommended programs and curriculum. We will specially design units to fit your particular academic instructional needs.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Three-week tuition is $2,000. Weekly tuition is $800. Graduate scholarship tuition is $100 for the entire institute.
HOW DO I GET COLLEGE CREDIT?
For a small additional fee, receive 3 quarter-credits or 2 semester-credits per week of instruction through Portland State University.
HOW DO I SPEND MY DAYS?
Sessions occur from 8:15 AM to 5 PM. Each morning begins with a review session which is arranged by having you participate in teams. From 9:00 to 12:00 participants will be able to observe, practice along with being coached in the Morningsides Academy's summer classroom. The afternoon sessions will be a combination of lecture, question & answer sessions and peer pracice. Some homework is required during the evening hours.
HOW DO I FIND HOUSING?
Morningside has reserved a group of rooms in a hotel that is within walking distance. In the past, participants have enjoyed staying at the same site. We can provide a list of other accommodations close to the school.
DO I QUALIFY FOR SCHOLARSHIP?
4-5 slots are reserved for graduate students each year. Please submit the following: CV, 1 or more letters of recommendation from professors, and an essay on how SSI advances your professional goals. Final decisions regarding scholarship occur in late May.
